Are you ready?? Spawning Season's: Indiana Fish. 04/13/2011
Anglers across the state have been catching crappie. The crappie are full of roe and ready to pop! They are not on the spawn yet, but as soon as water temps get where they like it, and conditions are right they will be moving in to spawn.
Crappie fishing is gonna turn on real fast! Oop's, almost forgot. Mushrooms have already started popping up. Mostly small grays and blacks so far.
With good weather I expect this will happen in the next few weeks.
Get your gear ready because it is going to happen! Small spinnerbaits, minnow and bobber, beetle spins for crappie and bluegill?
Lets not forget the white bass runs into Raccoon and Mississinewa reservoirs. Same at a few other places. The white bass should be turning on any day now.
DNR has stocked a few lakes with trout. They seem to be catching some in the Linton areas pits. Tailwater fishing has been poor in all lakes.
Bass are in pre-spawn stage. Fish drop-offs near spawning areas. Bass have been being caught on rattle traps, spinner baits, and plastics. Don't be afraid to try crankbaits or sthingyplugging.
The walleye bites been slow at Monroe. None known caught this year so far at Monroe tailwaters.
If you fish any farm ponds or pits, you already know that on warm sunny days the fish move back into the shallows. Jig & Pig it, or use plastics. Farm pond bite has been getting real good, but weather and timing needs to right. Some big bass have been caught.
The steelhead run has been on, and they are catching them in the Saint Joseph river.
Maumee river in northern Indiana is good for walleye !
Don't forget Dogwood lake, bream are turning on. Patoka crappie and many other lakes just waiting for good weather conditions and a full moon.
Ohio rivers high and muddy. Still a few sauger and skipjack being caught. Just scattered reports.
Catfish reports few. Did see one nice blue cat caught out of Monroe.
Clear View pay lakes in southern Indiana has been a hot spot for blue catfish. It is a pay lake but they have been catching 50 and 60 pound fish last few weeks. Flatheads are just now starting to move around. They have a "Big Fish Lake Only" and it's all catch and release. They also have a channel catfish lake for those who want eater size fish. This is one place I secretly mention to members here. I personally think I'll catch the biggest fish of my life here!! Catfish wise.
Just about all pay lakes in Indiana are open now. You should call before going just to check hours of operation, and see what kinds of bait they have. I do not recommend Indy Lakes on the Indianapolis south side!
River fishing has been poor. Currents are stong, muddy, and high, with the exception of a few in northen Indiana. Those guys say it's really low there in some areas. I think most of them are referring to the Kankakee river.
I tried to get back to my honey-hole on White river yesterday, but was way to muddy to even try it.
Good Fishing Everyone !!!
