And it's back this year, for the 25th straight time, boasting an award from the Indiana Water Resources Association for its enduring success.
Similar to Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park, DNR Water's display, housed in the Natural Resources Building, goes off every 20 minutes during building hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The goal is to instill the message of sound floodplain management practices in children so they will remember these lessons when they become landowners or developers as adults.
Adults enjoy it, too. Parents tell DNR staff their children have seen the model in previous years but insist on seeing it again. Some parents who saw the model as youngsters now bring their children to see and learn.
The switches and valves that produce thunder, lightning and rain are manually operated from behind a backdrop with curtains, bringing a Wizard of Oz feel to a fun educational tool.
