Fire Ban on Hoosier National Forest

Fire Ban on Hoosier National Forest
As dry conditions continue across Southern Indiana, Hoosier National Forest officials remind people of the increased fire danger. Forest Officials have implemented a Stage/Level 1 Burn Ban allowing fires only in designated recreation areas on the Forest. Gas stoves and appliances may be used but they must have a shut off. Under this burn ban the following acts are prohibited:
Building or using a fire, campfire, charcoal grill, or wood stove, except in Forest Service designated recreation sites and campgrounds where grills and fire rings are provided.
Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area that is cleared of all flammable material at least three feet in diameter.
Possessing, discharging or using fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices.
“These conditions this early in the season are unusual, so people need to be cautious,” said Terry Severson, Hoosier Fire Management Officer. Severson added that surface fuels are extremely dry and could result in larger fires and greater time and effort to control.
“Precautions are necessary until we get some precipitation,” said Chris Zimmer, District Ranger, “We will let the public know when we get enough rain to remove the ban.”
The Hoosier National Forest fire ban will remain in effect until conditions improve. For more information on the Hoosier National Forest fire program contact Terry Severson at 812-547-9247.
