of 2 NE Indiana projects
Event Description
ACRES Land Trust has completed the purchase of two environmentally significant properties in northeast Indiana with funding assistance from the Bicentennial Nature Trust (BNT).
Steuben County: 43-acre Richard Bruner Nature Preserve on Pigeon Pond, containing wetlands, upland forests and floodplain.
Allen County: 87-acre Blue Cast Springs featuring upland forest, floodplain, ravines, and 30-foot bluffs overlooking approximately 3,000 feet of Maumee River frontage.
ACRES owns and manages the properties, while the DNR holds conservation easements ensuring public access and permanent protection. It was announced last November that ACRES would receive BNT funding for the two projects.
“BNT funding has allowed ACRES to acquire properties that have been on our wish list for decades,” said Jason Kissel, executive director of ACRES. “The funds provided the catalyst needed to move these projects forward, and now these properties will be preserved forever.”
The BNT is a project of the Bicentennial Commission, co-chaired by former Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and former U.S. Representative Lee Hamilton. The statewide program is aimed at expanding trails, conservation areas and recreation sites to help celebrate Indiana’s 200 years of statehood in 2016. The state park system was created during Indiana’s centennial celebration in 1916, and BNT projects will provide a similar legacy for generations of Hoosiers.
An initial $20 million in state funding was identified for BNT projects, and the Lilly Endowment donated another $10 million to the effort. Money from the fund is matched no less than $1:1 with the local community or group sponsor. To date, the Bicentennial Commission has approved 28 projects.
“We applaud the ACRES Land Trust’s effort to further the 2016 Bicentennial Commission’s commitment to nature conservation in Indiana,” Skillman and Hamilton said in a shared statement. “We look forward to hearing and celebrating many more success stories for the Bicentennial Nature Trust in the months and years to come.”
ACRES is Indiana’s oldest and largest land trust, preserving more than 5,000 acres within its 85 nature preserves. ACRES also serves portions of southern Michigan and northwest Ohio. To learn more about ACRES, visit acreslandtrust.org or call (260) 637-2273.
The BNT is seeking additional private donations of land and money as well as input from communities on viable projects. Applications for the Nature Trust can be found at IN.gov/naturetrust.

[DNR] Emerald ash borer found in Putnam
and Shelby counties
Event Description
Emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive insect that kills ash trees, has been detected for the first time in two quarantined counties—Putman and Shelby.
In Putnam County, EAB was detected in a woodlot in Jefferson Township on the north side of Interstate 70. A consulting forester found it while conducting forest management work for the landowner.
The Shelby County detection occurred on the east side of Shelbyville in Addison Township. The infested tree was found by DNR Entomology nursery inspectors conducting a survey to detect walnut trees to use in a thousand canker disease survey this summer.
EAB, first detected in Indiana in 2004, has now been found in 61 Indiana counties. The primary mode of transport for this pest is through movement of firewood in campgrounds.
Both counties were already quarantined when a larger quarantined area was created in late 2011 for biological and economic reasons. Indiana’s EAB-quarantined area includes all but12 counties, all of which are in the southwestern part of the state.
The Indiana EAB quarantine regulates the movement of certain materials such as whole ash trees, ash limbs, untreated ash lumber with the bark attached, and cut firewood of any hardwood species with the bark attached. Moving regulated materials out of the quarantined area to the 12 southwestern counties requires a compliance agreement from the DNR.
Movement of regulated materials within the quarantined area is not restricted. However, DNR recommends against moving regulated material from April 15 through July, when EAB is emerging and flying to find trees to infest. Moving regulated materials during this time helps spread EAB.
Visitors can bring firewood onto DNR properties if it is certified by the USDA or DNR Division of Entomology & Plant Pathology, or is free of bark.
An application for a compliance agreement can be filed by contacting the DNR Entomology & Plant Pathology at (317) 232-4120. To view quarantined areas and EAB sightings in Indiana, see dnr.IN.gov/entomolo/5349.htm.
For more information on EAB, or to report an infestation, visit eabindiana.info or call Indiana DNR's toll-free hotline at 1-866-NO EXOTIC (663-9684). To view the EAB Rule and EAB quarantine declaration visit dnr.IN.gov/entomolo/3443.htm.

[DNR] Latest lab tests find no CWD in
Indiana’s wild deer
Event Description
The DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife reports that lab tests failed to detect chronic wasting disease in any of the 1,031 tissue samples collected in 2012 from hunter-harvested white-tailed deer in Indiana.
DFW biologists collected the samples at check stations across the state during last fall’s deer hunting season. The samples were submitted to the Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab at Purdue University for analysis.
Since the Indiana DNR began active CWD monitoring in 2002, more than 15,800 samples have been collected with no sample testing positive.
CWD is a contagious neurological disease affecting deer, elk and moose. It causes a characteristic spongy degeneration of the brains of infected animals, resulting in emaciation, abnormal behavior, loss of bodily functions and death.
CWD belongs to a group of diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, or TSEs, and is a variant of TSEs that affect domestic animals, such as scrapie in sheep and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, also known as “mad cow disease.”
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a TSE variant that affects humans.
The agents of CWD are called prions, which are abnormal, protease-resistant forms of cellular proteins normally synthesized in the central nervous system and lymphoid tissues.
Illinois, Wisconsin and most recently Pennsylvania are among several states that have confirmed cases of CWD in captive and free-roaming deer.
For more information about CWD, visit the Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance website at www.cwd-info.org.

[DNR] Emerald ash borer found in Martin,
Vigo counties
Event Description
Emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive insect that kills ash trees, has been detected for the first time in Martin and Vigo counties.
In Martin County, the pest was found near the Lawrence County line on U.S. 50.
In Vigo County, EAB was found on the Indiana State University campus. A Purdue University Extension entomologist sent a sample from the tree to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where the EAB infestation was confirmed. Purdue and DNR entomologists determined the tree had been infested for three years.
EAB, first detected in Indiana in 2004, has now been found in 59 Indiana counties. The primary mode of transport for this pest is through movement of firewood in campgrounds.
Martin County is in the process of being included in the the Indiana EAB quarantine area. Inclusion of Martin County would bring the number of counties under quarantine in Indiana to 80.
Vigo County was already included in the Indiana EAB quarantine because of its proximity to counties in Illinois and Indiana that are EAB-infested.
The Indiana EAB quarantine regulates the movement of certain materials such as whole ash trees, ash limbs, untreated ash lumber with the bark attached, and cut firewood of any hardwood species with the bark attached. Moving regulated materials out of the quarantined area requires a compliance agreement from the DNR.
To view quarantined areas and EAB sightings in Indiana, see dnr.IN.gov/entomolo/5349.htm.

of 2 NE Indiana projects
