Labor Day weekend virtually full at state campgrounds
DNR State Park and Reservoirs campgrounds and cabins are virtually booked to capacity for Labor Day weekend, a trend that's held steady since 2007.
Those who have yet to make plans for the weekend may want to consider reserving a shelter for a day at a DNR property for a picnic with family and friends. Those who still have the urge to camp can reserve one of the few sites left for the weekend by visiting www.camp.IN.gov or calling 1-866-6CAMPIN (1-866-622-6746). Shelters can be reserved at the same website and phone number.
All of the cabins are reserved for Labor Day weekend; 97 percent of the campsites are reserved. The year 2008 was the only time in the last four years all cabins were not reserved going into summer's last big weekend. That year, 99.3 percent were reserved. Campsites have been more than 97 percent reserved going into Labor Day weekend in each of the last four years.
Even though most lodging options are taken for the weekend, day trips are always possible to take a hike or swim where aquatic facilities remain open. Check with the property you plan to visit to find out hours of operation. There are lots of programs during the weekend. For starters, you can enjoy an ice cream social at Chain O'Lakes, take a sunset hike with the interpreter to Beach House Blowout at Indiana Dunes, get a team together for the annual Brown County "Survivor," explore the historic Moery Cabin at Patoka Lake's Visitor Center, take your child on a Young Birder's Hike at Salamonie Lake, or see the historic haypress at work at O'Bannon Woods. Event details for all properties can be found at www.interpretiveservices.IN.gov.
Campers should remember that camping opportunities don't end on Labor Day.
"Fall weekends have become popular for camping," said Christie Wilmoth, DNR reservation system program manager. "Campsite reservations for the Oct. 31 weekend are already filling, so those who want to mix treat-or-treating and camping, or take part in one or more of the many other fall-related festivals should make plans now." The 2010 Special Events Calendar at www.interpretiveservices.IN.gov provides details regarding all those weekends.
If you want to camp or visit a property but you're not sure where to go, find property maps and facility information at www.stateparks.IN.gov.
