WWII Weekend to be held at Fort Harrison State Park October 2 & 3
World War II Weekend will be held at Fort Harrison State Park on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3 at Fort Harrison State Park. The World War II program will feature many public activities through out the weekend, including a reenactment of a typical skirmish between American and German troops somewhere in France during 1944. The public battle will take place on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00pm at the Millennium Grove Picnic area. A public World War II weapons demonstrations are scheduled for Saturday, October 2 at 11:00a and again on Sunday, October 3 at 11:00a at the Camp Glenn Historic district. There will be open military camps for the public to visit on Saturday 10a - 4p, and on Sunday 10a - 2p.
Fort Harrison State Park was an active military base from 1906 until 1996. Fort Harrison was also an induction center during World War II for army recruits from 1941 - 1945. Fort Harrison was home to several base hospitals, support schools and the Finance Center during the WWII. Fort Harrison was decommissioned and turned over to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in 1996.
The participants are unpaid hobbyists who have joined reenacting organizations to get first-hand knowledge of what our WWII veterans may have experienced. The re-enactors dress in authentic and/or reproduction uniforms that they have researched and acquired. They use WWII era equipment and weapons to drill, exercise and simulate combat situations. The re-enactors will fight out in the field during the Reenactment much as did the soldiers that fought in Europe 1944-1945.
The WWII Weekend will be conducted regardless of the weather; park visitors coming to the Reenactment are advised to dress for the weather as this is an outdoor event. There is no cost to the program, the normal $5 in-state/ $7 out-of-state gate fee applies. For more information, please contact the park office at 317-591-0122.
