Indiana Dunes State Park dedicates interpretive exhibits Oct. 28
New interpretive exhibits at Indiana Dunes State Park's nature center will be dedicated on Oct. 28.
Visitors are invited to the event, which starts at 10 a.m. Indiana DNR State Parks and Reservoirs director Dan Bortner and assistant director for stewardship Ginger Murphy will speak about the new exhibit hall and share stories about the state park before the ribbon cutting.
The nature center was built in 1990 and, until now, held the original 20-year-old exhibits. The new exhibit hall showcases the natural and cultural history of the state park using interactive and immersive exhibits.
Visitors can learn how the dunes were formed, from early glacial history to today's plant succession; explore the JD Marshall shipwreck and climb aboard her pilot house; or take a journey in a replica French fur-trading voyageur canoe. The bird observation room, a perennial favorite, also has been upgraded.
"It's a chance to fully immerse yourself in the amazing biological and cultural diversity, which is a central theme in the dunes," said Brad Bumgardner, park interpretive naturalist. "There are activities for everyone, from 5 to 105 years old."
Participants in the new interpretive exhibit dedication will receive free entrance into the state park that morning. The nature center is located in the back of the park, just past the campground facilities. The dedication is scheduled for outdoors. Visitors should plan to dress for the weather.
