Rainbow or steelhead trout
Description:
Ever popular among Indiana anglers is the trout family, which includes the brown, lake and rainbow or steelhead trout. Many fisherman can be spotted on the shores during spawning season when the trout begin their runs into the tributaries. Rainbow or steelhead trout have a white mouth, teeth and gums and small black spots on their backs, sides, and caudal and dorsal fins. The caudal fin margin of the rainbow or steelhead trout is square and the fish has 9-12 anal fin rays.
Bait: Shrimp, spawn bags, spinners
Depth: Creek: Deeper holes and runs
Comments about fish:
Ice has formed on Trail Cr from the Franklin Street Drawbridge out to the MC Lighthouse Pier. If you plan to fish the harbor, you better bring a weight to break the ice. IDNR creel clerks report spotty action in local creeks this past week. Anglers trying their luck on Trail Cr reported action throughout the creek. Anglers fishing Salt Cr & the E Br of the Little Cal stated that the best fishing was occurring in the lower reaches. Top producing baits this past week include spawn sacs or pieces of shrimp floated just off the bottom through the deeper holes & runs. A few steelhead were also caught on spinners with either silver or orange blades.
Comments about body of water:
Area tribs are in good shape with average flows & stained water conditions. Shelf ice was starting to form in the slower sections of the creeks. Water temp of Trail Cr is 33ยบ F as of this morning. Personnel with Mixsawbah SFH recently completed stockings of winter-run steelhead in area creeks. A total of 124,221 steelhead were stocked. The E Br of the Little Cal at Mineral Springs Rd received 61,997 while Trail Cr at Springland Ave received 62,274. We ask that all anglers who catch these recently stocked fish to gently release them back into the water because they are our future steelhead fishery.
