There’s nothing like snow on the ground to lure folks back to the dunes when it’s cold outside. The park has a wide range of activities for the whole family to enjoy, including sledding, cross-country skiing, and hiking. The Nature Center is open all winter to give everyone a chance to warm their toes and to take in some of the diverse programming.
Here's a quick glimpse at some of the fun programs coming up this month:
· Break out your skis for a Saturday morning ski-in on Jan. 8. Bring your skis or borrow some of ours. Rentals are limited (kids and small adult sizes), so call ahead to reserve your pair or to check that we have your size. Hike begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Nature Center. In lieu of no snow, we’ll still offer a short walk.
· Join us for our annual Indiana Dunes Geocache Adventure on Saturday, Jan. 15. This event allows geocachers in the tri-state area to compete and have fun. We end the afternoon with a chili-dump back at the Nature Center. To register, or for more information, visit www.geocaching.com, and search zip code 46304.
· Bundle up and join us for a winter hike to one of the highest sand dunes in Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 22. Enjoy amazing views of shelf ice formations and more. Meet at the Nature Center at 10 a.m.
· Join us for a winter “owl” twilight stroll in the dunes’ forests on Saturday, Jan. 29. We’ll learn about our wintering owls, and see if we can hoot one up. Meet at the Nature Center at 5 p.m. for this exciting hike. It’s sure to be a hootin’ good time.
