Steele Files Bill To Thank Veterans
Proposal would allow disabled service members to purchase $50 lifetime hunting, fishing licenses
STATEHOUSE (Jan. 13, 2011) - State Sen. Brent Steele (R-Bedford) plans to introduce a bill this legislative session aimed at thanking Hoosier veterans with disabilities by offering them the opportunity to purchase combined, lifetime hunting and fishing licenses.
Senate Bill 153 would allow Indiana residents who served in the armed forces and have a service-connected disability to obtain licenses to hunt, fish and trap for a lifetime fee of just $50.
Lifetime hunting and fishing licenses have not been available to the general public since July 1, 2005. Current state law allows veterans with disabilities to purchase annual hunting and fishing licenses for $2.75. The combination license regularly costs $25 each year.
"This legislation is a special way of recognizing the dedication Hoosier veterans have shown to our great state and nation," Steele said. "I certainly appreciate the time and effort they have given to us as citizens of both Indiana and the United States. Offering lifetime hunting and fishing licenses is a small gesture, but I hope it will be accepted as a genuine thank you."
Steele's bill is assigned to the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, but has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.
