Visitors to the park can place their entry as to when the large snow pile will finally melt. The participant with the closest guess will be awarded a 2011 DNR Annual Entrance Permit. With more than 50 inches received so far this season, snow piles are abundant throughout the park. One specific snow pile, situated on the north end of the beach auxiliary lot, next to the park's main gate, will play host to the contest. "Visitors are welcome to come size it up and place their guess on when the last flake of snow will melt away," said Brad Bumgardner, the park's interpretive naturalist. "The park will maintain the pile should mother nature bring us more, but no other alterations will be done." Voting on this year's snow melt contest can be done at the park office, the nature center, or by emailing your name and address, as well as your answer to dunesnc@dnr.IN.gov. In your answer include the exact date and time the snow will completely melt. Deadline to enter is March 11. Hints and updates on expected melt dates will be offered for fans of the Indiana Dunes Facebook page, www.facebook.com/INdunes.
