Coho salmon
Description:
Members of the pacific salmon family, the chinook or king salmon and the coho salmon can be found in Lake Michigan and its tributaries in northern Indiana. Pacific salmons do not feed during spawning, but will strike a lure during their runs. Cohos will spawn in the fall in their third year of life and die, while chinooks will spawn in the fall, winter or spring in the fifth year of life, allowing them to grow larger. The teeth of the coho salmon are set in light color gums. The coho salmon has black spots on the upper lobe of a slightly forked caudal fin with 12-15 anal fin rays.
Bait: Nightcrawlers, squid, shrimp, wobbler type sthingys
Depth: 4' down to bottom
Comments about fish:
Limits of coho salmon along with a few brown trout have been caught by boat anglers around Gary’s Light. Small bodybaits fished 8-17' down have been effective. No other action reported out of the marinas in southern LM. Shore anglers are catching good numbers of coho salmon along with a few steelhead from the harbor in MC. Cohos have also been caught inside the Port of Indiana. Anglers stated that N/C, minnows, shrimp & pieces of squid suspended under a bobber are the hot baits. Cohos have also been caught on wobbler type sthingys & small crankbaits. Cohos have been averaging 18" which translates into a 1½ lbs. No other shore action has been reported in southern LM.
Rainbow or steelhead trout
Description:
Ever popular among Indiana anglers is the trout family, which includes the brown, lake and rainbow or steelhead trout. Many fisherman can be spotted on the shores during spawning season when the trout begin their runs into the tributaries. Rainbow or steelhead trout have a white mouth, teeth and gums and small black spots on their backs, sides, and caudal and dorsal fins. The caudal fin margin of the rainbow or steelhead trout is square and the fish has 9-12 anal fin rays.
Bait: Shrimp, spawn bags, spinners
Depth: Creek: Deeper holes and runs
Comments about fish:
See coho salmon for shore action. Good numbers of fresh steelhead reported in all tributaries this past week according to Indiana Department of Natural Resources creel clerks. Steelhead are scattered throughout Trail and Salt Creek and the lower reaches of the East Branch. According to anglers, steelhead have been caught on a variety of baits including pieces of shrimp or spawn bags floated just above the bottom in the deeper holes & runs. Another good area to try this time of year is the tail outs of pools. Male steelhead congregate in these areas picking off any eggs that may float by. Spinners with black, brass or silver blades can also be effective at this time as stream water temps rise.
Comments about body of water:
Northwest Indiana tribs are in great shape with good flows & visibility. Water temp of Trail Cr. at Friendship Gardens was 35 F as of this morning. Surface water temp in the harbor of MC is 39 F with visibility around 18-24". Anglers, be aware that personnel with the Jordon River National Fish Hatchery will be stocking lake trout next to the MC Coast Guard Station on Monday, March 14, 2011. Next week, I will update the stocking numbers.
